Outdoor Vertical Gardens

Mexico has found a beautiful way to clean its polluted Air.

In Mexico, the bridges and flyover columns are being converted into more than 6,00,000 sqft of vertical gardens. One of those projects is called Via Verde to transform more than 1,000 concrete pillars of the elevated highway of Mexico City to improve the air quality and aesthetics of the city.

Vertical Garden by Via Verde, Mexico
Fernando Ortiz Monasterio, Founder & Director, Via Verde said “this project will produce Oxygen for more than 25,000 people each year and suck up more than 27,000 tons of harmful gases, captures more than 11,000 Pounds of dust”. Additionally, this utilizes rainwater to keep all 5,00,000 plants alive. He also mentioned that the project would not use a single drop of drinkable water, they are using all the elevated highway surfaces to capture the rainwater, which will be cleaned and used in a combination of grey water.

They also use an irrigation process in the vertical gardens, uses recycled plastic. The team has developed a technology that allows the plants not to grow in the soil, but in a specific felt that is made of plastic bottles and has the same density as soil. The team is very glad that they are doing something productive for the city. The team is says that the project has grabbed their attention and excited each one of them.

This concept of vertical garden, is not just good for the environment, it benefits the living around it by reducing stress. It is the first of many to reduce the air contamination problems around the world.
